    The Karelian Maiden exhibition explores the diversity of being Karelian and the phenomena of folk culture. Travel through the different eras of the region, and experience life and the role of women in Karelia, an area that has been shaped by wars, peace and social upheavals throughout history.

  • River – Nature and history along the River Pielisjoki

    The otter living on the River Pielisjoki introduces the whole family to the world of North Karelia’s most important waterway. What kind of fauna live on and in the River Pielisjoki? How has the river and its location shaped the industrial and business life of North Karelia?

  • Live to believe! – Folklorist’s cellar

    A researcher of contemporary folklore, folklorist Kuikka, invites the visitor into the exciting world of folk narrative. Folklorist Kuikka has gathered a collection of objects and stories in the cellar that open the door between reality as we know it and the supernatural. Not everything you see may be true, but the human love of stories is eternal.

Tenavatori

Tenavatori is a functional museum space for young children, inspired by Joensuu Market Square. It invites the whole family to spend unhurried time together and to enjoy imaginative play. In the exhibition, young visitors are guided by a lively resident of the Pielisjoki – an otter – who adventures through Tenavatori and eventually retreats to its own treasure chamber to rest.
