Renovation of the Joensuu Art Museum nearing completion – museum to reopen to the public in 2027

16.9.2026

The extensive renovation of the Joensuu Art Museum is nearing completion. Finishing work will continue at the Kirkkokatu site throughout the autumn.

The renovation of the museum building began in July 2025.

The renovation encompasses the entire museum building. During the project, the premises of the 19th-century building are being modernised to meet the needs of museum operations. The renovation will also ensure that the art museum can continue to serve visitors and provide a diverse programme of exhibitions and events, both now and in the future.

“I am delighted that this truly extensive and thorough renovation of the art museum is nearing completion. In the future, we will have a well-equipped art museum capable of hosting major national and international exhibitions. Planning for the upcoming exhibitions is already well under way. We, too, are eagerly looking forward to opening the new exhibitions next year,” says Museum Director Tarja Raninen-Siiskonen.

Once the premises have been handed over, museum staff will begin bringing the new facilities into use and preparing the upcoming exhibitions.

Joensuu Art Museum Onni will reopen to the public during the first half of 2027.

Further information about the exact opening date and upcoming exhibitions will be announced later on the Joensuu Museums website and social media channels.

The renovation of the art museum is part of a City of Joensuu project that has received a grant of EUR 18 million from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The European Investment Bank (EIB) is also financing the project with a loan of EUR 120 million
